Democracy Beyond Elections: Enhancing the Democratic Participation of EU Citizens with Migration and Refugee Background

Are you an EU citizen with migration or refugee background who was a first time voter in the June 2024 EU elections ? Are you  passionate about democratic participation?

The Human Rights Cities Network invites you to participate in a one day event, in Brussels, to meet and dialogue with decision-makers from EU institutions about  “Democracy beyond Elections: Enhancing the Democratic Participation of EU Citizens with Migration and Refugee Background”.

The event is part of the DARE – Democratic Action of Refugees in Europe project, supported by ALDA – European Association for Local Democracy and funded by the European Union.

The overall goal of the project is to enhance the democratic participation of EU citizens with migration and refugee background. The first two activities held before the June 2024 EU elections focused on promoting the participation of first time voters, through a webinar and an online workshop.

The second part of the project focuses on democratic participation beyond elections. The concrete objectives of the Brussels event are to:

  1. Raise awareness among participants about mechanisms for democratic participation in the EU beyond elections;
  2. Create space for dialogue with MEPs on challenges for the democratic participation of EU citizens with migration and refugee background and potential solutions;
  3. Strengthen the capacity of the participants to advocate for their rights at EU level.

Practical information

The event will take place  on the 17th of October (Thursday), in Brussels. The Human Rights Cities Network (HRCN) is selecting 10 participants who are citizens of one of the 27 EU countries with a migration or refugee background. Detailed programme for the 17 October will be shared with selected participants.
