A debate on Fundamental Rights and EU Values will be held during the European Committee of the Regions Plenary Session (CoR), on 11 April 2019 (10:30- 12:00). Plenary sessions gather CoR members coming from regions and cities from all 28 EU countries.
Frans Timmermans, First Vice-President of the European Commission, will set out some of the principal concerns and questions facing the European Union related to the respect of fundamental rights and EU values in some Member States. Koen Lenaerts, President of the Court of Justice of the European Union, and Michael O’Flaherty, Director of the EU Agency for Fundamental Rights, will highlight issues of fundamental rights of particular importance to local and regional leaders.
They will be joined by a representative of Europe’s leading human-rights organisation, the Council of Europe – Domenica Ghidei Biidu, Vice-Chair of the European Commission against Racism and Intolerance of the Council of Europe. An open debate with CoR members is expected to raise concerns over specific ongoing cases.
