The European Capital of Democracy
ECoD is a European-wide and EU funded initiative which aims to strengthen and innovate democracy. This year, the first European Capital of Democracy will be elected from a wide pool of applicants. The winning city or municipality will hold this honorary title and follow a programme to enhance their democratic processes during the year ’23/’24. Every year, a new Capital of Democracy will take the lead for democratic improvement in their locality.
The Juries
Two Juries will play a role in choosing the European Capital of Democracy ’23/’24. The Expert’s Jury, made up of recognized experts and actors in different fields of knowledge, who will evaluate all submissions and draw up a shortlist of max. 5 Nominee cities. The Citizen’s Jury, composed of 10,000 European citizens, will get the final vote to determine the new Capital of Democracy. The winner will be announced at the beginning of 2023.
How to become part of the Citizen’s Jury
It is, in fact, quite simple. You can visit the ECoD website to pre-register as a Juror.
The ECoD is an organisation that stands up for diversity and equal chances such as gender equality, intergenerational justice, the social equality of people with a migration history, with special needs, and of the LGBTQI+ community. Such criteria will also be taken into account in the selection process of the Jurors.
